If you choose to do so, don't forget to send flowers to Dolphinton to surprise your date. They'll appreciate it for sure and it does set a very romantic tone.

HISTORY

Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Dolphinton as a post-office hamlet and a parish located on the eastern border of the upper ward of Lanarkshire.

The village dates back centuries ago and the local manor once belonged to the elder brother of the first Earl of Dunbar, Dolfine, after which the village received its name. The estate was owned by the Brown family in various forms from the 16th to the 19th centuries. It then passed to the McKenzie family by marriage.

Dolphinton became a pertinent place of Bothwell and shared along in the fortunes of that barony.

GEOGRAPHY

Dolphinton is located 7 miles northeast of Biggar. It is also 11 miles northeast of Carstairs, 10 miles southwest of Leadburn and 27 miles southwest of Ediburgh. All of these distances apply when on the A702 road.

THINGS TO DO

Given its really picturesque setting, Dolphinton could always be your destination for a romantic getaway. You can just admire the views that greet you when you come to the village. Of course, it wouldn't be a romantic trip if you don't present your date with some Dolphinton flowers.

Of course, if you want to treat them to a romantic meal, that is an option as well. You can take them to some nice restaurants in nearby Biggar. Even better, present them with some flowers in Dolphinton so it really makes their day.

When you take your family with you to Dolphinton, one of the best activities you can do is head out to nearby Biggar. There, you'll find a world of attractions. To strengthen the case of heading there, Biggar has more museums per head than any other town in Scotland. Among those that you get to enjoy includes:

Greenhill Covenantors Museum - 17th century house that was rescued by the Biggar Museum Trust from its original location at Wiston, which is about 13 km away. The house was re-built and furnished in Burn Braes, Biggar in 1975.

Biggar Glassworks Museum – the only preserved gasworks left in Scotland. The small town of Biggar had its own gasworks as early as 1839 and over the years it was modified and expanded in order to keep up with the increase in demand. When natural gas from the North Sea came to Biggar in 1973, the gasworks shut down. However, it wasn't demolished but was preserved by the Historic Buildings and Monuments and the National Museums of Scotland for future generations.

When you want some leisurely activity, there are some options in Biggar as well. Some of these include:

a golf course
a boating pond and synthetic tennis court at Biggar Park
