Flower Delivery to Buchanan Castle in Stirlingshire, Scotland
Set in a forested residential estate, Buchanan Castle has a history dating back to at least the 13th century when it was the home of the Buchanan family. The house later passed to the Graham family in the 17th century and still remains their seat. Read on to find out more about the castle and its grounds.
The Buchanan family owned the estate from at least 1231. When that line failed in 1682, James Graham, 3rd Marques of Montrose, bought the property. In 1707, Graham's son became the 1st Duke of Montrose. William Adam, an architect, created designs for the house and parklands in 1745.
In 1850, the house was destroyed and William Burn was commissioned by the duke to replace it. The design Burn came up with was a manor in the Scottish baronial style that enclosed an L-plan tower with turrets, bartizans and stepped gables. In 1925, the castle was sold but it wasn't until 1930 that the castle opened as a hotel and a golf course was created on the grounds.
There were plans for residential development on the estate but that was delayed due to the Second World War. During the war, the house was used as a hospital. After that, it was used as the Army of School Education.
Since then, there have been residential buildings established in the castle gardens and grounds. Today, the castle is a category B listed building and is on the list of Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland. Also, the castle grounds are in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes which lists the nationally significant gardens in Scotland.
