Flower Delivery to Killin with Clare Florist
Killin is a small town in the Stirling area of Scotland. The town is located on the west end of Loch Tay, near the beautiful and picturesque Falls of Dochart. However, this beautiful little town is more than just breathtaking natural views and experiences. It is a lovely place to live, with a long and storied history.
Killin is the traditional home of the McNab clan, and their historic mausoleum and graveyard is visible from the bridge over the River Dochart. The McNabs were based in Kinnell house, and there are buildings still visible and standing in the old grounds, although these buildings are in disrepair and visitors are advised not to get too close for the sake of safety.
Also near Killin is the ruins of Finlarig Castle, home of the Campbell of Breadalbane. In the 1600s, the Campbells were able to oust the McNabs from Kinnell house and the area. The McNabs were not able to return to the home until after World War II.
In the 18th century Killin became a center of the flax and linen industries, but today much of the industry in Killin is based around the historic character of Killin. Many of the buildings are well-preserved historical structures and tourism is the primary industry in the town. Local watersports are also a draw for tourists because the proximity to the loch and the river allow for many different types of water sports, including fishing.
There are a few annual events in Killin that attract tourists and local visitors. These primarily take place in August, which is when the town hosts a highland games, an agricultural show and a 10k race. The highland games are a celebration of traditional highland activities, including caber tossing and hammer throwing. Both of these sports exhibit the strength and control that was much prized in early highland society. Highland games also include piping and dancing competitions and various amusements and shop stalls for visitors.
The agricultural show provides sheep and cattle competitions, as well as a fancy dress parade and other races, competitions and exhibitions of local skills and products. In addition, the agricultural show has a dance in the evening, making it a full experience for the entire family.
