Beyton is eight miles east of Bury St Edmunds, two miles south-esast of Thurston and eight miles north-west of Stowmarket. Should you want to come for a visit, these are the things you should know about:
It is believed that the meaning of the village's name is “homestead by brook” or “Beaga's homestead.” The village is listed in the Domesday Book as Begoton or Begatona. During that time, the village was held by Hugh de Montfort and was just a small settlement.
Beyton was a farming community and was located on the glacial clay of “High” Suffolk. The village grew around the village green and along the main Ipswich to Bury St Edmunds road. In 1711, the road was turnpiked and it became an accident “black spot” in modern times. The village was bypassed in 1978 with the moden A14 road running to the north of the village. A conservation area was established in 1973.
There are a few attractions worth visiting in and around Beyton. Here's a list:
· All Saints Church – one of the 38 existing round-tower churches in Suffolk. Thought to be of Saxon origin, there are elements of the structure that are from the 13th century, the present tower in particular. It was heavily restored in the 19th century and is a Grade II* listed building.
· Woolpit & District Museum – tells the story of life of a Suffolk village. The displays change each year except the brickworks display.
· Haughley Park – located in Stowmarket, this historical house is a listed structure. The large red-brick country house was built around 1620 for the Sulyard family who were prominent landowners in the area. The Sulyard family owned the property for two centuries then it was sold. Today, the house is a private residence but the gardens are open to the public at certain times of the year.
· Bury St Edmunds Abbey – one of the richest and most powerful Benedictine monasteries in England.
