Flower Delivery to Blythburgh with Clare Florist
Located in the Suffolk Coastal District, Blythburgh is a beautiful English town nestled just to the west of Southwold and southeast of Halesworth. The town itself was established along the River Blyth which helps account for its name. The population of village is just under 300 and the parish includes the smaller hamlets of Hinton and Bulcamp.
The town is arguably best known for the Holy Trinity Church, which is also known as the Cathedral of the Marshes and has been a popular tourist attraction for travellers along the A12. Founded by Augustine monks back in the 12th century, Blythburgh represents the best of the Suffolk area all in a tidy village that resides near the famous marshlands and near the Suffolk coast.
The first recorded incident in the area where the town of Blythburgh eventually formed occurred in either 653 or 654 AD when the forces of Anna of East Anglia was defeated by Penda of Mercia. It is believed that Anna and her son Jurmin are buried at Blythburgh Priory having been killed during the battle. Hundreds of years later, Blythburgh was formed and became quite the large village with 42 households as part of King William’s claim.
Over the next few hundred years the village grew and supported the kings with taxes. However, by the 18th century the River Blyth had silted over considerably and it took considerable effort which included installing locks to keep it open. However, by 1934 the area downstream from the village had silted over and the locks were closed as a result. During this time growth in the village had halted due in large part to the lack of trade.
The next most notable event in the region occurred in 1940 when the mud-flats and marshlands near the River Blyth were flooded as a precaution against German invasion during the opening stages of World War II. In addition, Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. who was the eldest brother of the Kennedy clan was killed just south of the village while flying an experimental bomber which exploded.
The town itself is noted for its marshlands that surround the village and for peaceful, tranquil atmosphere which is typical in this part of the UK. There have been several notable people from Blythburgh, but arguably the most famous is actor Ralph Fiennes.
