Reigate, in Surrey, is probably best known these days as a popular London commuter base. However, it is an important market town in its own right, with historic links to the land and agriculture. Situated in an attractively wooded and surprisingly hilly part of Surrey, it was listed in the Domesday Book as Cherchefelle, which means 'the open space by the hill.' It later became known as Reigate, apparently derived from Roe-deer Gate as the town was located by de Warenne's deer park.
