Salfords is derived from Salix, a Latin term for willow. With ford in the mix, it means ‘Ford by the willows’. In 1762, it was called "Salvers" with "Salvers Bridge" in Rocque's map.
The village of Salfords owed its existence to the construction of the A23 road. Before the 1970s, it was a part of Horley, another town in Surrey. A state school was built in town located on the fork between the Pendleton Road on Petridge Common and the London Road. In 1915, a railway station was built which provided workers access to the Monotype Corporation factory.

Today, the village is as vibrant as the Salfords flowers that add colours to the wide expanse of green. It has its own primary school, cafés, a tanning salon, a social club, a number of shops, restaurants and a take away, and a 20th century church, Christ The King.
Salfords also have its own village cricket club. The Salfords Cricket Club was formed in 1921. It hosts a number of events – an annual "Cricket Week" of mid-week games held every July, a Sunday friendly side two Saturday League sides in the Surrey Downs League, and an annual tour every August.

Notable landmarks

If there’s one thing Salfords has plenty of churches will be it. There are practically more churches in the village than schools. The 1881 Mission Church, however, has now become a garden of remembrance after years of renovation.

Horley Lodge Manor House is one of the 5 manor houses in the village. It is originally part of the parish of Horley before, Salfords became a village. It still serves as a venue where criminal and matters of law are dealt with.

History archives also showed that there used to be a Lodge Mill off Lodge Lane, and the Brighton Road Mill House.

There’s also the Village Hall that replaced the original hall that was built in 1925.
