The Domesday Book, the great survey commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1086 mentions the settlement as Witlei. However, the All Saints' Church is a clue that Witley existed at least since Anglo-Saxons times. The building preserves original stonework that leaves no doubt regarding the architectural style. The church was transformed and extended towards the end of the 12th century to the form that survived until today. Old Cottage and Step Cottage are buildings close to the church dating back to the 15th and 16th century.

Many visitors come to Witley lured by the story of Whitaker Wright. The famous company promoter and swindler bought land in the area in the 1890s and went on to develop something lavishing even for the Victorian age. Whitaker shaped the farmland landscape to accommodate four artificial lakes and a 32-room mansion. He did not stop there. A huge iron and glass ballroom lies 40ft beneath one of the lakes. Whitaker’s story of opulence ended when his financial schemes were discovered, and he was forced to commit suicide. With the main building burning in 1953, the grounds were divided and became known as Witley Park. Although the site is not open to the public, the private owners occasionally grant access to the impressive ballroom and gardens. Whitaker’s ambitions have the merit of putting Witley on the map and giving the place new pages of history.

The agricultural coordinate of Witley keeps it in close contact with the surrounding natural landscape. The summer months accommodate each year events like the Witley Village Fair. Just 5 miles south of the market town of Godalming, Witley lies near England’s newest National Park - South Downs. Witley Common is an area of woodland and heath close to Witley Village and intended to provide a preserved habitat for wildlife. Managed by the National Trust, it served as an army training camp during the two world wars.
The cowslip is the official flower of the Surrey County. Although no florist would ever assemble a bouquet from such wild species, it helps to identify the yellow clusters of beauty as one of the most common Witley flowers.
