Flower Delivery to Sutherland with Clare Florist

Sutherland is a land registration county in the Highlands of Scotland. It borders Caithness to the east, Ross-shire and Cromartyshire to the south and to the north and west is the Atlantic Ocean. The name Sutherland dates back to the era of the Norse rule and settlement over most of the Highlands as well as Islands. Although within it are some of Great Britain’s northernmost lands, it however took the name Suðrland ("southern land") as viewed from the Orkney and Caithness standpoint.

It was not until 1601, that the Province of Strathnaver at the northwest corner of Sutherland was incorporated into Sutherland. It was home to the warlike and powerful Clan Mackay and as such named Dùthaich 'Ic Aoidh in Gaelic which means the Homeland of Mackay. This part of Sutherland today is is known as Mackay Country and unlike other parts of Scotland where the traditional names of the area have been diluted, there is still a prevalence of Mackays in the Dùthaich.

Sutherland is blessed with some of the most dramatic albeit beautiful scenery in the whole of Europe. This is especially evident at the western fringe at the point where the mountains and the sea meet. Here are high sea cliffs and very old mountains made up of Precambrian and Cambrian rocks. The inland landscape is rugged and sparsely populated. In terms of area, Sutherland is Scotland’s fifth largest county with a population comparable to that of a medium size Lowland Scottish town. There are many rugged mountains, fine beaches like the Sandwood Bay which is accessible only by foot along a rough track.

Its population is mainly concentrated in the coastal towns, such as Helmsdale and Lochinver. Until recently these towns made much of their living from fishing around the British Isles. Compared to the Rest of Scotland, much of Sutherland is poor with few job opportunities beyond government funded employment, agriculture and seasonal tourism.

ATTRACTIONS

Sandwood Bay

Reputed to be one of Europe’s best beaches, Sandwood bay is a four mile flat walk from Blairmore north of Kinlochbervie to the impressive unspoilt sand of Scotland’s northwest coast. Tales abound of the a ghost nearby that haunts a ruined cottage close to the beach. Stout shoes should be worn for the walk and can be taken off upon arrival. If you fear animals then it is best to sit out the trip as the walk goes through grazing land where sheep roam. Bring along a suncream and a waterproof, the weather is very unpredictable. Also bring along food and water. Take along a camera to capture the scenery and remember to bring along a mobile phone but do not rely on it to work, Finally remember to leave before it is dark or you may lose your way.

Timespan museum

Timespan museum provides an insight to Helmsdale, Sutherland and the surrounding area history. The collection illustrates different aspects of ways of life in the past with recreations of a croft, byre, smithy and shop. Other displays present the areas’ archaeology, geology and natural history. The gallery also showcases works of international, national and local artists.
