The gallery, which has free admission, is beautifully set in secluded woodland gardens. The house was originally built for the Secretary of State for Scotland James Johnston in 1710 but demolished in 1926. The baroque Octagon room and the outbuilding were saved and in 1972 were turned into the art gallery.
