Ansty is a delightful little Warwickshire village with a rich history.  Its name, Ansty, comes from the Old English word Anstig, meaning ‘lonely path.’ While it has expanded and grown over the centuries, the village has grown outward from a central path that winds its way through the homes and villages that rest of the outskirts of Coventry.

One of the most intriguing bits of Ansty’s history comes from its original land owner.  The village itself is first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as owned by the famous (or infamous) Lady Godiva.

The main village hall, known simply as Ansty Hall, was first built in 1678.  This century’s old brick and stone building has seven individual bays, and also serves as the village’s only hotel.

Cotton and cotton weaving was a primary industry in Ansty beginning in the 18th Century, which developed into a highly coveted ribbon making industry in the 19th century.  It did finally begin to decline in the 1830s.

In 1771, Ansty became host to a section of the Oxford Canal, facilitating trade and travel both to and from the city.

For much of the most recent century, Ansty was reaching for the stars. In the 1950s, Armstrong Siddeley Motors established a plant in Ansty for the production of aircraft motors and gas turbines. Later, the extravagant car company Rolls-Royce took possession of the plant but it was closed in 2013.

Visitors to Ansty are invited to visit its pub, The Rose and Castle Inn, which rests beside the Oxford Canal.  It is a fantastic place to relax, get a drink or have a meal while observing the beauty that is the village of Ansty.
