Flower Delivery to Barnham with Clare Florist
Barnham, located in the Arun district of West Sussex, is a small village in southeast England. This somewhat rural community has important agriculture and horticultural beginnings that continue to this day.
Barnham’s history, like many other small villages in England, begins in 1105 with the construction of St. Mary’s Church. In addition to its historical importance to the area, the church has an elaborate and beautifully carved piece of Sussex marble as part of its architecture.
With its rich alluvial soil from its close location to the ocean, Barnham is known for its glasshouses hosting numerous species of plants, vegetables, and flowers. The nurseries at Barnham were so important that during the 19th century, a daily special train left Barnham daily for the flower markets in London at Covent Gardens. At the height of the flower and vegetable production, the glasshouses in Barnham were producing over 45 tons of tomatoes each year. The village is known for having one of the first cultivated mushroom farms and for supplying the plants, trees, and flowers for numerous landscape architects who created custom gardens and landscapes for wealthy clients all over Great Britain.
With these rolling fields and pastures, Barnham was also an ideal location for the English cattle market, which transformed the village beginning in 1890. Barnham was one of the largest and most important centres of cattle and cereal markets in all of Sussex.
Perhaps what makes Barnham recognizable today is its well-known windmill. Today it’s known as Barnham Windmill, but since its construction in 1820, it has been known as John Baker’s Mill and Fever’s Mill. During the heyday of Barnham in the 19th century, as many as eleven working windmills were in Barnham, all serving the agricultural industry. As the only still existing windmill, it is currently being remodelled, situated next door to a popular shopping area in the farm setting.
With so many rolling fields and pastures, Barnham is an ideal location for enjoying the natural landscape and offers many opportunities to walk maintained footpaths and trails. In addition, Barnham Court Farm provides visitors two enjoy the countryside with horseback riding, birdwatching, and other outdoor pursuits.
Even with the abundance of plants and flowers in Barnham, it’s easy to send flowers to the village with Clare Florist.
