Flower Delivery to Fishbourne with Clare Florist
A small, yet very important village located just over three kilometres west of the city of Chichester, Fishbourne in West Sussex offers a fine destination for travel whether your interest is in history or simply visiting a remarkable little town that is situated in the beautiful Sussex countryside. Located in the Chichester District, the name “Fishbourne” means “stream with fish” which indicates some of the topography and interest in the area as well.
The parish itself contains almost 2,000 people over 956 acres of land. Currently, there is a railway station in the town and two public houses as well. The village itself might be described as fairly typical of the West Sussex area that offers a quiet stop when travelling.
Formally a busy port town, Fishbourne today is mostly linked to the railway for most of its travel needs. However, Fishbourne itself does boast a healthy tourism industry for a village of its sized based in large part on the ancient ruins of a bygone era in British history.
The Roman Palace of Fishbourne
Arguably the biggest point of interest in the area is the remarkable ruins of a Roman palace which was discovered and excavated in the 1960s. Nearly 2,000 years ago the Romans occupied much of England and the area of modern-day Sussex was of vital interest to them. It appears that around 43AD a very large palace was built in what is today Fishbourne in order to help secure an agreement with the Atrebates, a tribe that was friendly to the Romans.
The King of the Atrebates, Verica, had actually sought out Roman protection and in return a magnificent palace was built, one of the largest ever constructed in the Roman Empire. The palace replaced several wooden buildings that were in the area and lasted for over two centuries before a fire destroyed much of the structure which was never rebuilt. By that time, Roman influence over England was waning and they were soon to leave in order to protect the heart of their crumbling empire.
Today, the palace lies under the A27 and some of the housing in Fishbourne, so a full excavation is highly unlikely. However, the discovery of the palace has led to a remarkable interest in the region which has built up a sizable tourism industry.
