HISTORY

Almondbury was an important Tudor settlement. During the Medieval Era, the town was granted a market – nearby Huddersfield didn't get one until 1671.

A map from 1634 showed several timber-framed structures on either side of what is now Westgate. Beyond these buildings were what are assumed to be gardens. Who knows? Maybe they featured a couple of Almondbury flowers in those green spaces.

HERITAGE ATTRACTIONS

Wormald's Hall – the only survivor of the structures listed in the 1634 map. It was built during the mid-16th century. Now, it's a Conservative Club. The building takes its name from Isaac Wormald who refaced the lower part of the house in stone in 1631 in keeping with the fashion during the time. His initials, as well as that of his wife Mary, can be seen on the lintel over the door.

All Hallows' Church – a result of the remodelling of a church that existed during the Middle Ages. The original church was remodelled during the latter part of the 15th and early 16th century.

King James's School – established thanks to a royal charter, called the Letters Patent, that was granted by James I on 24 November 1608. The school became a grammar school. It had various names, including Almondbury Grammar School and King James's Grammar School, before it took on its name today.

NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

Castle Hill – a prominent landmark located in Huddersfield. It's one of the important Iron Age hill forts in Yorkshire.

Huddersfield Town Hall – a magnificent structure that dominates much of its surrounding area. It's a fine example of classic Italianate style and it was designed by John H Abbey.

Huddersfield Art Gallery – opened in 1940 and bears a “stripped classical style.” The gallery features a permanent collection of mostly 20th century British art – drawings, paintings, prints and sculptures.
