Flower Delivery to New Farnley with Clare Florist
New Farnley is a village located in the metropolitan district of Leeds, and situated in the upper central portion of England. It’s in West Yorkshire county and about a 3.2 kilometre drive to the centre of Leeds. It’s a portion of Ferneley, which dates back to medieval times, with a mention in the 1086 Domesday book as “Fernelei”. The New Fernley portion of the village is more of a residential area. It began around the early 19th century as a solution to housing workers for local industry.
Residents of Farnley would have worked in one of the many mills in this region. There were larger mills such as Butterbowl Mill, Union Bridge Mill and Woolen Mills in Post Hill.
Farnley remained full of forest and farms until the 19th century where many trees were removed. Edward Armitage built the Farnley Iron Works and Farnley Fireclay businesses. This is around when the village of New Farnley was begun, so these workers would have a place to live. While it’s believed that people lived in this region dating back to ancient times, the village was officially named New Farnley in the 19th century. During the industrial revolution, what had previously been two historic settlements in Bawn and Low Moor Side merged to become part of New Farnley.
To further add to the confusion there is also another portion of Leeds called Farnley, so New Farnley and Old Farnley as often referred to as such. Old Farnley encompasses the old Farnley Manor, Hall, and estate.
There are still older 17th and 18th century buildings standing in New Farnley. This region was considered part of the Manor of Farnley in the past before it became its own village. Notable families of the past included the Harringstons, Nevilles, Brudenells, Danbys, and Armitages.
A third century Roman coin was found in New Farnley. On Harper Farm is a hill named Castle Hill where it’s believed that it may have been the site of an ancient Roman marching camp. The village also retains some field names dating back to Saxon times, and the remains of a ridge and furrow from medieval times. Snittels Farm may have been the location of a leper hospital during medieval times as well, but no documentation has been found backing up that claim.
Today there are still several farms in operation in New Farnley. The village has schools, a Methodist chapel and St. James’s Church. The village also has some basic services and shops. There is a recreational field where the residents and school children can enjoy playing many outdoor activities. There is a community centre that runs many activities for the villagers, including Halloween and Christmas events.
