Britford with Clare Florist
The small civil parish and village of Britford is located along the River Avon in Wiltshire about 1.5 miles southeast of the town of Salisbury. You can find the village near the A338 road and its current population is roughly 600 residents.
The history of Britford actually goes back thousands of years thanks to the discovery of a settlement from the Iron Age located just to the southwest of the town in Little Woodbury. Excavations done just prior to World War II confirmed the location of a village that went back to the Iron Age and included the discovery of storage pits, granaries, and even a circular house that was quite large for its time, being over 50 feet in diameter. A hill fort from the same period was located just a mile from Britford in Great Woodbury indicating that this settlement was fairly extensive in nature.
While the establishment of modern Britford is not fully known, the parish church under the Church of England of Saint Peter was constructed by the Saxons in the area sometime in the 9th century AD. The indications are that the village of Britford has been well established by that point. In the 14th century, the church was expanded and remodelled to what you see today. A tomb chest monument built in the 15th century in the church supposedly contains the remains of the Second Duke of Buckingham, Henry Stafford who was executed in 1483.
There are various structures in Britford that were built hundreds of years ago, including the Rectory Farmhouse that was constructed in the 17th century. The Moat House was also built around that time and was named after the moat that was installed presumably for protection.
There is a Church of England primary school located in Britford constructed in 1959 and replacing the old National School that was originally built in 1853. The school has merged with the primary school in Odstock that created the Longford C of E Primary School. There is also the Salisbury District Hospital within a mile of the village and Park and Ride bus services that operate near the A338 road.
The village itself retains its historic feel and while not a tourist destination, it is often visited by those who are passing through the area. The rich history combined with the beautiful countryside and friendly people have helped make Britford the village it is today.
