Flower Delivery to Garsdon with Clare Florist
The village of Garsdon is part of the civil parish of Lea and Cleverton, located in the southwest county of Wilsthire in England. It used to be a separate parish until 1934. It has one church on site and also the Garsdon Manor, which dates back to the 14 century. The George Washington family is connected to the ancestors of this region. The Woodbridge Brook flows through the parish, and joins the Bristol Avon River. The population for the entire region, including Lea and Cleverton is around 800 residents.
The region used to have a cricket team called “The Lea Lackadasicals” which used to play Sunday afternoon matches in town. Outdoor facilities still have a cricket net for the residents to use.
The village is large enough for a school, the Lea & Garsdone CE Primary School. There is also a village hall. In addition to the cricket net, outdoor facilities include a tennis court, and a play area for children to enjoy.
The local Anglican church is the Church of All Saints at Garsdon. There is a small graveyard beside it containing many ascendents of George Washington’s family, and a memorial plaque. The church was built in the 14th century, and had extensive work done in 1850. It sits on a small hill and is surrounded by fields. From here you can see spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The church has a square medieval tower to one side. Tubular bells can be heard at certain times of the year, including Easter. This church can hold up to 80 people at any one time.
The Church of All Saints has connections with the George Washington family, ancestors of the first president of the United States. Some of the Washington family are buried here, and a memorial plaque at the cemetary commemorates the site. Each Easter, the church is host to the Woodbridge Group Good Friday service. A crucifixion drama takes place at Easter.
Garsdon Manor has a long history. It was built in the 14th century. It’s listed by the English Heritage Trust as a protected building. It was formerly the property of the Abbot of Malmesbury. In 1643, Henry the VIII gave the farm, manor, and acreage to Richard Moody. Ownership was passed down through the years to various members of the English aristocracy and gentry, including the George Washington family.
Garsdon Manor was owned by George Washington’s ancestor, Sir Laurence Washington, among other relatives.
The Manor has a surrounding ornamental garden, and records date the garden back to 1720, with not much changed about it. It’s unknown if the garden existed prior to that time.
