The Valley of the Frome was once part of the Church's manors at Domesday Book in 1086. It has been said that Bishop Cantiloupe stayed at the iconic Cheyney Court between 1275 and 1282, as did Bishop Swinfield sometime between 1283 and 1317 and the property became Bishop's Palace. Residency in the once majestic walled property, however, ceased after the late 13th century. The Cheyney Court, an Elizabethan manor house, was burned down in 1888, and a newer structure was built beside its ruins.
