Flower Delivery to Aislaby Village in County Durham

The small village of Aislaby is located within the borough of Stockton-on-Tees. It is on the north bank of the River Tees, and is to the west of Yarm and Eaglescliffe. It is a civil parish that is part of the ceremonial county of County Durham, England. This rural hamlet developed as a loose group of properties. In a study done in 1988, it is characterised by open spaces and is dominated by Aislaby Manor, which sits on high ground in a central location. At that time of the study there were only some 37 residents and 14 dwellings. Since 1988, the number of residents and houses has doubled but the village still retains its character of a small settlement with large areas of open space. So if you want to have a romantic holiday where you can take leisurely walks and stop to smell fresh air and the flowers, Aislaby is a lovely spot.

History

The name Aislaby is believed to be of Viking origin and there have been a number of different spellings over the centuries. It is said that it got its name from a very old family called Aslackby in the 13th century. In 1086 it was first attested as Asuluebi and means “Aslak's farm”. In 1313, William D. Aslackby built and dedicated a chapel to St. Thomas the Martyr and the remains of this chapel can still be seen at the Aislaby Manor Farm.

Aislaby Road runs through the village and was once the main road from Darlington to Yarm. Drovers used this road on their way to the market and local field labourers would let their sheep graze on the green as it was common land. Along this road used to be the Black Bull, where coaches would stop for refreshments while their horses were shod at the smithy. Most of the village residents are in business nowadays but there are still a few farms in Aislaby.

Historically and ceremonially, Aislaby is located in County Durham. But it is located in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees (which was made a unitary authority in 1996) for administrative purposes. Before that, it was a part of the non-metropolitan county of Cleveland, which was created on April 01, 1974 under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972.

After falling into disrepair during the 19th century it was turned into a sweet factory and a community building. It was given a full makeover in 2007 and can now accommodate around 200 people. It has since become a favourite intimate venue for live entertainment.
