Watlington's claim to fame is the Watlington White Maker which was designed by Edward Horne, a local squire. He felt that the parish church of St Leonard would look more impressive from his home if it looked like it had a spire. It was cut into the chalk escarpment of Watlington Hill in 1764.

The area is believed to have been settled at an early date, spurred by the proximity of the Icknield Way. Watlington looks to have been occupied from around the 6th century as Æthelred of Mercia mentions eight “manses” or major dwellings in Watlington in a 9th century charter.
According to medieval documents, the modern street plan was in existence in the 14th century, perhaps even earlier. Inns have also been in existence in town since the 15th century. At the end of the 18th century, there were six inns all of which were bought by the Haywards, a local brewing family.
Today, three public houses exist in Watlington: the Carriers Arms, The Chequers and The Fat Fox Inn.
