Every year on February 14th we celebrate Valentine's Day which usually involves, amongst other things, sending a bouquet of romantic flowers to our significant other or our crush. But how exactly did this tradition come about?

The origin of Valentine's Day is said to begin in 3rd century Rome. The reigning Emperor Claudius II made it for illegal for young men to marry, the justification being that single men were better soldiers.

An indignant young priest by the name of Valentine chose to fight this oppression by continuing to marry young couples in secret ceremonies. When an enraged Claudius found out about this he sentenced Valentine to death. Whilst in prison awaiting execution, Valentine developed feelings for the daughter of the jailer. Before his death, he wrote to her, signing off the letter "from your Valentine." The date of Valentine's execution was February the 14th, 270AD.

It wasn't until approximately 226 years later that Pope Gelasius nominated the 14th as Valentine's Day in honour of Valentine who, by this point, had been sainted. This explains why we celebrate St Valentine's Day and why we often send cards signed "your Valentine." But why are flowers in particular so popular as a gift on this occasion?

There are various reasons for this. Generally, flowers have always signified romance and love in mankind's ceremonies. Historically, the middle of February also coincided with fertility festivals during which flowers were always popular. We can also look to the language of flowers for more clues as to why flowers are such a popular Valentine's Day gift. Since the 18th century it has been a custom to send flowers to convey a specific meaning without using words. Flowers such as roses have always been used to convey feelings of love, romance and passion.
