Flower Delivery to Torphins, Aberdeenshire with Clare Florist
Looking for a quiet and wonderful place to escape to? Make it Torphins, Aberdeenshire. This village in Royal Deeside rests in a valley surrounded by rich farmlands and rolling hills, making it the perfect spot for watching a rich wildlife and beautiful flowers in Torphins. In fact, you will find the endangered red squirrel in dense pathways that weave through the village, along with roe deer, common buzzard, Beltie beast, Crathes cat, pheasants and hedgehogs. The nearby smaller village, Lumphanan, is just as rich in natural wonders and steeped in history that is worth a detour.
It was in 1750 when the village literally appeared on the map as Turfins. There are various suggestions as to how the name Torphins came about, with one attractive idea that it was named after Thorfinn Sigurdsson or Thorfinn the Mighty, Macbeth’s cousin. But it’s more likely to have come from the Gaelic term torr fions, which translate to white hills, a reference to the Hill Fare, located east of the village.
It wasn’t until the mid 1800s when the extremely small settlement grew, due in part of the arrival of the Deeside Railway, linking Aberdeen to Ballater. When its operations stopped in 1996, the population declined, but picked up again in the 1970s, during the boom of the North Sea oil. Today, there are only around 1300 people living in Torphins, which gives you an idea on how really small the past settlement was. Nonetheless, a majority of its residents are wealthy people working in the oil industry in Aberdeen. The population also shows how quiet and peaceful this village can be.
As one of the larger villages, Torphins has a good selection of local shops that sell just about everything, from Torphins flowers to bread. The first bakery in the village was opened in 1898 by Joseph Walker. To this day, the original bakery of Walkers Shortbread can still be seen in the Bridge Crescent.
It is also home to Torphins AFC, the local amateur football club. Sports facilities in the village include a tennis club, seasonal curling rink and lawn bowls club. But a prominent feature is the challenging 9-hole golf course of the Torphins Golf Club.
As for wildlife watching and nature walks, the perfect spot is the Caledonian pine forest that is also home to vibrant flowers in Torphins. Here, you can enjoy different outdoor activities, such as hiking and cycling. For more chances of seeing a red squirrel, you can also visit the Learney estate.
Torphins celebrates an annual gala where locals and tourists alike can experience a traditional Scottish celebration. Families can enjoy fun-filled activities during the festivities, including Mini Highland Games. There is also a parade where you can see Torphins flowers on display.
The Learney Arms Hotel in Torphins is believed to have been built around an earlier inn. It took its current form in 1874, which only shows how historical the building is. This makes the hotel a place for sleeping and discovering rolled into one.
Despite its size and small population, Torphins makes an ideal place to visit and live in. Know though that most of its properties are high priced but are really worth the money.
