Located six miles south-east of Milton Keynes, Woburn Sands is a small town named as such due to it standing mostly on sandy soil. To the south, there is a lovely wooded and heather-clad expanse that also has sandy paths that go on for miles and miles. This path extends into the locality known as Aspley Heath.
The village of Aspley Guise in Bedfordshire merges with Woburn Sands. The small town of Woburn lies two miles to the south and features an unspoilt Georgian centre.
Located close by is Woburn Abbey, which is the ancestral house of the Dukes of Bedford and contains a large safari park. Both the abbey and the park are open to the public for most of the year.
What Woburn Sands prides itself in is the multitude of activities it has to offer – both for children, adults and even senior citizens.
HISTORY OF WOBURN SANDS
The Iron Age marks the earliest evidence of settlement area as a hill fort from the era is located to the south-west of town.
It became part of the parish of Wavendon when it was developed into a hamlet. It became a separate civil parish in 1907. Woburn Sands became a town in its own right under the Local Government Act 1972.
Hogsty End was the original name for the village. It was one of the four “ends” of Wavendon, the others being Church End, Cross End and Lower End. However, the name fell out of favour during the Victorian times.
A local story says that a schoolmaster was unable to attract students to his Hogsty End Academy which prompted the name change.
The name the village uses now – Woburn Sands – is related to Woburn in Bedfordshire. It's sandy soil is also a result of being close to the Greenland Ridge, which is an escarpment of Greensand.
