The earliest mention of the village in historical documents is in the year 931 on the Cotton Charter, a will from a Saxon servant known as Wulfgar. The will lists land owned by Wulfgar “at inche penne.” The village name is spelled in various ways over the years including: Ingepenne, Hingepenne, Ingepenna, Ingepenn, Enkepenne, and Yngepenn. Various archaeological digs over the years have found artefacts related to the Stone Age, Iron Age burial mounds and circles, and the Saxons. There is little evidence of Roman activity in Inkpen.

Half of the highest point in the southeast region of England, Walbury Hill, is located within the Inkpen village boundaries. At the hill’s summit is the Iron Age hill fort remains known as Walbury Camp. St. Michael’s Church, an active Church of England parish in Inkpen, was built in the 13th century, with renovations made in the 15th and restorations done in the late 1890s. Inkpen was one part of a former forest known as Savernake, which is now a private property that is open to the public. In the centre of the village is a large field of Mediterranean crocuses, one of only two in the United Kingdom. It is believed that the plants were brought to Inkpen by the Knights Templar in the Middle Ages, with the hopes of beginning saffron production in England. The field is maintained by the Berkshire Wildlife Trust.
