Flower Delivery to Akeley with Clare Florist

Situated in the Aylesbury Vale District of Buckinghamshire, Akeley is about 2.5 miles north of Buckingham. The village is on the Towcester Road which is between the villages of Lillingstone Dayrell and Maids Moreton.

HISTORY

The name of Akeley is derived from the Old English for “Oak Field.” Akeley is also in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it is recorded as Achelei.

The Cluniac priory of nearby Newton Longville controlled the village on behalf of the priory of Saint Faith in Longueville in northern France. The parish church, St James the Apostle, was built in the village in 1154 and was rebuilt by architect John Tarring in 1854 in a Gothic Revival design. However, the church fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1982.

There was once a medieval deer park in Akeley, as well as a school where poor children were taught how to make lace.

EVENTS

Each year, there's a display of flowers in Akeley through the annual horticultural show. It's an event that has been run in town since 1976. Through this event, horticultural lovers and visitors can see various Akeley flowers on display.

Also, Akeley has its own Gardening Club where members can talk about horticultural topics and go on coach trips, car outings, wine making and wine tasting.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS & AMENITIES

Bull & Butcher – the village pub. It's a traditional family-run 16th century local pub. It has a reputation for offering fine food, excellent real ales and a warm, cosy atmosphere. When you want to treat your date to a hearty, home-cooked meal, this is one of the best places to take them to. Should you want the occasion to be more romantic, you can send flowers to Akeley to surprise your date once you return to your accommodation.

Nearby Attractions

Buckingham Chantry Chapel – a 15th-century chapel tucked away in a cosy corner of the market square. It's the oldest building in Buckingham, and it was restored by Gilbert Scott in 1875. Having had many uses over the years, it is thriving as a second-hand bookshop and coffee shop.

Stowe – features picture-perfect views, winding paths, lakeside walks and temples. A visit to Stowe starts at the New Inn visitor centre outside the gardens. Lovers of the outdoors and walking will love the sheer size of the place. Also worth visiting are the gardens at Stowe which is just inspiring. If you didn't get enough of flowers in Akeley, hopefully a visit here will satisfy that thirst.

Claydon – features 18th-century English interiors and is situated in an idyllic country setting. Ralph Verney went on a quest to create a country house of such remarkable grandeur at his family seat in Buckinghamshire in the 1750s. He imagined it to be a home that would impress his wealthy neighbours and surpass those of his rivals in politics. Claydon is the result of that ambition and the interiors of the home are indeed some of the most lavish created during the 18th century. Only, Verney was in financial ruin after thirty years.
