History

Aston Clinton is said to have started at the junction of the Roman roads, Icknield Way and Akeman Street. It became a Saxon settlement after the Roman Empire ended, with traces of history as evidenced by the remains of a Saxon cemetery unearthed when the Aston Clinton Bypass was constructed.

Documented records state that it was called “Estone” and in 1066, it was under thepatronage of King Edward the Confessor. In the 12th century, the village was transferred to Sirt William de Farendon by King Henry III. Its name became Aston Clinton when the manor was owned by the de Clinton family in 1237. There still had several transfers of ownership of the manor by marriage, with the last ownership handed to the Lord Lake of Aston Clinton.
