The town of Bargoed is found in the Rhymney Valley of south-east Wales, on the banks of the Rhymney River in the borough of Caerphilly. Sitting astride the ancient boundary between Monmouthshire and Glamorgan, the direct translation of the town's Welsh name of 'Bargod' is, fittingly, 'border'.

Historically, Bargoed was a market town, later developing into a hub of the UK coaling industry during the 20th Century. Today, the town retains its importance in the area, providing a number of goods and services to the wider Rhymney Valley community.

With its bustling high street and weekly street market, Bargoed is the shopping centre of the Rhymney Valley. The town is also where the county's largest urban park, Bargoed Park, can be found, a place most famous for its floral harp.

The recent construction of the A469 bypass in the town has connected Bargoed to the nearby areas of Pengam, Gilfach and Aberbargoed. The town is additionally served with numerous public transport links, with a bus station and train station. Bargoed Railway Station offers services to Cardiff Central, Penarth and Rhymney.
