This picturesque village has the origin of its name from two settlements or hamlets located on the crossroads. These two places dates back to ancient Roman times where “Stow” means “high or holy place” and “Quy” means “Cow Island”. Stow, being the high land is located 50 feet above sea level and in medieval times, was referred to as “Stowe Quye”. These two places were joined as one in 1100.
This village has a long history and is said to have existed as early as the Bronze Age as evidenced by the remains discovered in the parish, a Roman villa west of Quy Hall. Despite the joining of these two Saxon settlements, there were separate manors that time and during the 13th century, it became a single ecclesiastical parish.

This Jacobean-style house has a working mill and numerous gardens, including the quintessential English Rose Garden with thousands of roses, Wildflower Meadows which is also a home for butterflies and bees and The Herbaceous Border which showcases Stow-Cum Quy flowers and blooms like lupins, pyrethrums and irises.
Sky Light Garden
Apart from admiring a kaleidoscope of colors and heavy scents in the gardens, join other visitors in a relaxing experience while leaning your back on one of the twelve oak structures that encircle this garden. These structures are for watching the beautiful skies above while surrounded by hazel bushes and ornamental grasses with the Lilac bushes planted on two triangular shaped beds at the center.
