Located in Cheshire in North West England, near Wales, Capenhurst is a beautiful and tiny town of about four hundred residents. This may seem small, but it is a huge increase since the nineteenth century:  the census from 1801 listed the population as only one hundred and forty-seven!

The most famous landmark in Capenhurst is the Holy Trinity Church. It was built in the middle of the nineteenth century by architect James Harrison. The church, made out of sandstone, was built in the Gothic Revival style. Toward the end of the century, architect John Douglas restored and added on to the church. Today, the church is still active, being used for Anglican services. The churchyard also contains the graves of two World War One soldiers and of one World War Two soldier. Another large feature of the town is that it is the site of the Urenco Group’s uranium enrichment plant. The plant employs about three hundred people and is responsible for some of the growth of the town.

For some more local flavour, the Capenhurst Sports Field and Pavilion host the games of the town’s football, rugby, and cricket teams. The football team is part of the Carlsberg West Cheshire League. Both the ruby and cricket teams are Division Three.

There is also a train station in town. The stop is on the Wirral Line in the Merseyrail network. However, locals do not need to take the train to get to the closest attractions. The Blue Planet Aquarium houses the largest shark collection in all of Europe. The National Waterways Museum features inland waterways that lead out to the sea. (This attraction is particularly exciting since it will be reopening in February after extensive renovations!) Finally, the Ness Botanic Gardens is nearby as well. This sixty-four acre estate is a must see and is also featured on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
