History

County Londonderry
was created by James I when he gave a charter to the Irish Society to undertake a new plantation. The “London” in the name of the county was affixed as a reference to the London Livery Companies of the Irish Society. The charter was dated 29 March 1613.

That time, the county was comprised of the following baronies of Tirkeeran, Coleraine and Keenaght; all of the barony of Loughinsholin except the soutwest corner which was part of County Tyrone; the North East Liberties of Coleraine; the city of Londonderry and the Liberties.

The city was detached from the county due to the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898 for administrative purposes. It became a separate borough in 1899. The county town of County Londonderry was moved to the town of Coleraine and remained the seat of the Londonderry County Council until its abolition in 1973.

The Crown confiscated almost all the county after the Flight of the Earls in 1607. In 1609, the county was given to the City of London Corporation and its livery companies. In 1613, the area that was given to the City of London Corporation was incorporated into the newly founded County Londonderry.
