Allithwaite, a small village in the county of Cumbria, is in the northwest of England. The village is just west of the resort town of Grange-over-Sands and on Morecambe Bay’s north shore.
Allithwaite’s village name comes from the Norse language and translates to “a clearing belonging to Eilifr.” The village was actually a part of the county of Lancashire until 1974 when new boundary lines were drawn.

Within the village, there are many historic structures, most notably St. Mary’s Church. This Anglican parish was built in the 1860s and is a registered historic building. In addition, Wraysholme Tower, a 15th century pele tower, is located in Allithwaite.  This watch tower is adjacent to a 19th century farmhouse. Farming was a main industry of the village, something that still occurs in Allithwaite today. Historically, there was once a quarry in Allithwaite that provided a significant amount of limestone to the country, including the local church. Nearby is Humphrey Head, a limestone cliff on a peninsula in Morecambe Bay. A “holy well” exists here that was visited by miners for its curative powers for lead poisoning, a common affliction among the mining community. Humphrey Head is a protected land area overseen by the Cumbria Wildlife Trust.

Allithwaite is located just minutes away from the Lake District National Park. With its rolling hills, scenic landscape, and access to water, the village is a great spot for exploring walking trails, fishing, and sailing. Walking from Allithwaite, there is the Cistercian Way and Cumbrian Coastal Path, both two scenic trails to enjoy the views of the countryside and coastline. In addition, there is access to the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway in the village, which connects to Windermere’s Cruise Ships, allowing a leisurely way to take in the landscape and views.
