Flower Delivery to Smardale with Clare Florist

Smardale is a lovely yet small village located in Cumbria, England. The name of this village may be derived from the word “smere”, which is an ancient name for “clover” or for butter, fat, or grease in the old Norse or old English. That means “Smardale” stands for “valley of clover” or “valley of butter”.

Smardale is one of those villages that still conserves signs of ancient human activity, which makes it very interesting. For one, you’ll find archaeological remains of settlements in Smardale Fell and also around Smardale Gill. If you’re interested in archaeology, this might be a great visit for you. Smardale Gill is a small valley that connects this village to the valley of the River Eden and to the eastern end of the valley of the River Lune. The Romans knew the River Eden as “Itouna” in the 2nd century AD; this name derives from the Celtic word which means “water” or “rushing”.

The Smardale Gill Nature Reserve is one of the highlights of this village, and visitors are always delighted to spend some time there. If you’re a true lover of nature you will find joy in Smardale Gill Nature Reserve as you’ll be able to walk among the wildlife, which includes different species of birds such as fieldfare, goldfinch, and redwing, and you’ll also find butterflies and the occasional red squirrels and roe deer, while also enjoying the aforementioned archeological sites that are simply a wonder.

According to visitors, the walk is around 3.4 miles from end to end, and you’ll get to see the Smardale Viaduct, which stretches as far as 12 arches, and it’s 131 feet high and 237 yards long. The old railway line that passed under the viaduct is still there and you can walk alongside it you wish. The walk is suited for people of all ages, and it is accessible to wheelchairs, strollers and bikes, so it’ll be something that the whole family will be able to enjoy.

The Smardale Gill Nature Reserve is a beautiful walk surrounded by the lovely countryside of the Cumbrian hills and the whole area is full of wildflowers, woodland and grassland. Nature enthusiasts might want to keep an eye out for Smardale flora such as bluebells, purple orchids, and primrose!

Smardale Hall is an essential visit to the history enthusiast! This hall house was built in the 15th and 16th century, and it’s a great architectural example of the period. The hall has a tower at each corner of the property, which donnes it with an incredible medieval appearance. Plus, there are actually earthwork remains of another medieval house on the grounds and of what was probably a medieval motte.
