The village of Fremington is on the south bank of the tidal estuary of the River Taw and a smaller river, Fremington Pill. At one time the village was a port village on the River Taw, known as Fremington Quay.  This port was once one of the busiest in the import/export trade of England, as the site was well-located with access to railways, cranes, and other apparatus throughout the early to mid-2oth century. The Fremington Quay was most known for its export of ball clay and import of coal.

In addition, Fremington House once was the manor house of the village, built in the early Georgian period. It was remodelled in the 19th century and used as a training camp, hospital, and rehabilitation centre during World War II by the United States Army. After the war, the British Army used Fremington House for training and housing of the Amphibious Squadrons of the Royal Army Service Corps and Royal Corps of Transport until 1980. It is now a retirement home. The grounds of Fremington House were used for defence training camp until 2009.
