Along the southern coast of England is the quiet, quaint village of Owermoigne in Dorset. Located about seven miles southeast of Dorchester and about eight miles east of Weymouth, this sleepy little town is rich with history and ambiance of a bygone era, yet it lives quite comfortably in modern times. The current population is around 467, yet the village itself often has traffic from nearby towns and settlements along the coast.

The unusual name of the town is part a corruption of the Celtic word “ogrodrust” for “Ower” which means the gaps in the chalk hills that allow the wind to whip in from the sea and “Le Moigne” for “Moigne”, a family that were the Lords of the Manor for nearly three hundred years after the Norman Conquest of 1066.

History of Owermoigne

The earliest known settlement of the region occurred during the Roman occupation nearly 2,000 years ago. Over the next thousand years the village grew a little as the Romans left and control of England swayed between different factions. However, the Norman Conquest of 1066 led to the establishment of the Le Moigne family as the Lord of the Manor over Owermoigne which they held for the next three centuries.

The Le Moigne family was replaced by the Sturtons by marriage and they proceeded to build Owermoigne Court which was the setting for a brutal murder in the 16th century. Lord Charles Sturton had murdered a man that occurred during the reign of Queen Mary and he was sentenced to hang for his crime. However, Roman Catholic faith allowed him to choose a silk rope for his execution which no doubt makes the event a little more comfortable.

Thanks to its central location, the Manorial Court in the village handled most matters of justice over the next thousand years until the early part of the 20th century. During that time, many of the structures that dominate the village were built that included the parish and many of the fabled whitewashed homes that dot the village.

Owermoigne Today

The actual village has changed relatively little as many of the old whitewashed houses along with the parish Church of St. Michaels still stand. If the village sounds a little familiar in terms of its quaint style and location, it is because the setting was used as Nether Moynton in the fictional Wessex found in the Thomas Hardy novels. Today, the village receives plenty of tourists who get to see a rich part of English history mixed with the present during their stay.
