Hastings is an ancient town in East Sussex which will be forever known as the place where William the Conqueror landed in 1066 and changed English history - although the battle when King Harold was killed didn't actually happen there. That was at nearby Senlac Hill.

Although it has a population of about 87,000, it's a lively spot with regular events taking place throughout the year. The Jack-in-the-Green festival takes place during the May Day bank holiday weekend. That ends with the finish of the May-day-run, when thousands of motorcyclists arrive on the A21. In August there's the annual carnival with a week of events in Hastings Old Town. That includes a bike race, Seaboot race, pram race and street party.

The month-long arts festival is held in September. Hastings Week is held in October. That includes a torchlight procession, a beach bonfire and fireworks. Other events include the Hastings Musical Festival, the Beer and Music Festival and the Chess Congress, an international competition.

Hastings was an important fishing port for several centuries. It still has the biggest beach-based fishing industry in England. It became a seaside resort when the railway arrived in the 1800s. It now has two major roads and four rail links, making flower delivery to Hastings a convenient proposition.

Hastings is sprinkled with open spaces and parks. The biggest and most popular is Alexandra Park, opened in 1882. It's a mixture of well-tended gardens, woods and wilder open spaces. A major tourist attraction is St Clements Caves, which celebrates a dubious part of Hastings' history as a centre of smuggling 200 years ago. The caves have life-sized figures, spooky sound effects and eerie lighting to bring the sometimes bloody history of smuggling to life.
