Flower Delivery to Canvey Island with Clare Florist

Canvey Island is not only a civil parish that lies just off the south coast of Essex around 30 miles from London and 15 miles from Southend of Sea, it is a reclaimed island in the Thames Estuary. The island has an area of 18.45 square km and the population of the island, at the last official count, was 38,170. The island is separated from the South Essex mainland by a variety of creeks and as the island is found at just above the sea level, it can succumb to flooding at times of high tide. Another element which impacts on the fact that Canvey Island is at risk of flooding is the fact that the island lies very flat.

The land was primarily used for agriculture, but this changed in the 20th century, when the island became known for being the fastest growing seaside resort in the whole of Britain. It achieved this feat between the period of 1911 and 1951. Sadly, there was a significant flood in 1953, which cost the lives of 58 people and caused 13,000 people to be evacuated. This led to a change in the protection of the defences of the sea around Canvey Island, which has taken place with the construction of 2 miles of concrete walls in the sea. The most recent and prominent changes to the defences of the island took place in 2008 and also incorporated flood sirens and a water drainage system.

One notable thing about the island is the fact that there is a notable relationship with the petrochemical industry. Canvey Island was the place where the initial delivery, by container ship, of liquefied natural gas took place. There was a notable assessment on what risks, if any, were posed to a population living in close proximity to the shipping and storing of facilities of this nature.

One of the most notable historical landmarks in the local area is the Lobster Smack Public House, which can be found in the southwestern corner of Canvey Island. The buildings origins can be traced back to the 17th century and it a building which holds a Grade II listed status. It was a pub which was mentioned in Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. There is also a row of wooden cottages alongside the pub which can be traced back to the 19th century, and this row of cottages also holds a Grade II listed status.

Other notable landmarks in Canvey Island relate to the seaside resort which developed in the 20th century, with one of the most notable buildings being the Labworth Café, which was initially built in the early 1930s. Sadly the building fell into a state of disrepair in the late 1970s and early 1980s but in 1996, the building underwent a period of renovation, and it currently operates as a restaurant and a beach bistro.

There is also a Heritage Centre to be found on Canvey Road, and this was the former St Katherines Church, which was initially built in the 1870s. The church stopped being used as a place of worship in the 1960s and it currently holds a folk museum and an arts and craft centre.
