HISTORY

Notley used to be the term to describe both White Notley and Black Notley, a larger neighbouring village that is located three miles north-west. Both villages used to form one township and is even mentioned in the Domesday Book.

The term Notley is said to be derived from the Old English words knut and ley which mean “nut pasture.” The hazel trees for which the town is named after still exist around the village as well as in the hedgerows of fields surrounding the town.

The village of White Notley is located close to the Cressing Temple, a former Knights Templar Preceptory.
