Scotland is a country known for its fierce patriotism and beautiful scenery. However, it’s also home to many historic towns. One of which can be found in the county of Fife.

Auchtermuchty can be found beside Pitlour Hill. Situated nine miles north of Glenrothes, it’s easily accessible from Dundee. From here, it takes approximately half an hour to reach the aforementioned town.

Into the Past

The first evidence of dwellings in the town dates back to the time of the Romans (around 350 A.D). It was believed that Roman soldiers built a camp in the southeast corner.

In 1517, Auchtermuchty became a royal burgh under the charter decreed by King James V. It retained this status until 1975.

Economies

Initially, it was the linen industry that provided work for majority of the people in town. But when John White brought a foundry during the early 18th century, some of the locals found jobs at his firm too. A distillery also operated in the area from 1829 to 1929. Today, a modest range of local industry remains as most people of working age seek employment elsewhere.  You can still find shops selling local produce and flowers in Auchtermuchty.

Honourable Mentions

The town has been mentioned in both a song and a published literary work. It’s part of the lyrics of You’ll Never Find a Nessie in the Zoo, theme song of The Family Ness, which is a British cartoon series that aired in the 1980s. It’s also in The Private Memoirs of a Justified Sinner by James Hogg.

Visit the War Memorial where the names of those who died in World War I and II are listed. You can also lay a wreath of Auchtermuchty flowers on the monument.

Get a drink at a local pub and hear all about the devil’s visit to this town. The early people here were said to be so pious that Satan himself came, in the form of a Presbyterian minister, to tempt them. Cloven hoofs gave him away and people have scrutinised visiting clergy ever since.

Examine the architecture of various homes in the area. Red pantiles and crow gabled roofs make great photo subjects.

Walk on the grounds of Myres Castle with its Japanese flowering trees and wall climbing roses.

Explore the town’s oldest buildings. These include the MacDuff House, a private residence, and Boar’s Head, an inn that’s now a hotel.

See the Tory Brig, one of the many bridges over the Calsay Burn. This structure has historical significance because it was part of the route taken by Tory voters to get to the Town Hall. It enabled them to avoid an angry mob of townsfolk.
