HISTORY

The history of Crossford can be traced as far back as the Bronze Age as there were discoveries made pertaining to that period in the area. In particular, there was evidence found in Craigs Farm that pertained to agricultural activity.

It is said that the name Crossford comes from the ford that is crossed by monks who were on their way to the Dunfermline and Culcross abbeys.

During the 16th century, coal and iron stone were mined from the lands of Pitfirrane thanks to a charter that was granted by Queen Mary to the Lairds of Pitfirrane. The resulting products were transported through the Waggon Road to Limekilns for shipping through the port that was there.

The introduction of the Turnpike Act in 1796 resulted in the installation of a toll bar on the Waggon Road. To this day, the building that housed this structure still exists on the crossroads located on the centre of the village.

The modern day Keavil House Hotel was used by the Admiralty as a base for high-ranking officers during World War I. The village is also the location of the 16th century 4-storey towerhouse Pifirrane Castle which is now the home of the Dunfermline Golf Club.

NATURE

The land around Crossford is fertile and is sought after for agriculture. A designated Green Belt located at the south east of the village between Waggon Road and Dunfermline attracts several birdlife, including pheasant, wild geese, curlew, heron and much more.

The Crossford sycamore also stands on the south west corner near Keavil Steadings. This tree is around 300 years old and is a significant heritage tree listed in the veteran tree register.

Given the very nature-like appeal of Crossford, nature lovers will surely love what they will see here. Remember, get your date or partner some Crossford flowers so they truly feel romance in the air.
