Flower Delivery to Dysart with Clare Florist

Squeezed in between Kirkcaldy and Wemyss, Dysart is considered a suburb of Kirkcaldy. Despite that, Dysart has its own distinctive story and has been in its history, a very active and wealthy town involved in coal mining, salt production, textiles, fishing, boat building and trade. Throughout its history, however, Dysart has fluctuated between successful and not, and that is reflected in the town you see today.

HISTORY

Dysart got its name either from the Latin word “deserta” which means “the fasting place of a holy man” or from the Celtic word “dys-ard” meaning height of god.

Little is known about the history of Dysart before the 16th century. The earliest record about the existence of the town is a document regarding the papal decision between Dysart Kirk and Dunfermline Abbey in 1220.

A port has been in town as early as 1450 which helped in the export of coal and salt with the Low Countries, the town's trading partner.

Dysart went through a tough time during the 16th and 17th centuries as many of its residents, particularly skippers, were killed in the wars of covenanting and the five-year occupation of Oliver Cromwell. Despite this, the salt trade prospered between the town and the Netherlands and the Baltic Countries.

Towards the end of the 16th century, the first coal pit was opened. The import of wine and spirits revived the harbour. However, the pressure of Earl of Rosslyn's Coal Company to deepen the harbour so it could be used by larger ships proved to be its downfall. In addition, the closure of the first pit ended the coal trade. Due to the lack of revenue from the harbour, Dysart was forced to merge with Kirkcaldy in 1930.

Today, Dysart is considered the north-eastern suburb of Kirkcaldy, and it forms one of the 48 conservation areas in Fife.

ATTRACTIONS

If you love old structures, you will enjoy what Dysart has to offer. Should you bring your partner along,  don't forget to set things off right by presenting them with Dysart flowers. If you can't get some, you can always send flowers to Dysart to your accommodation – it's a more dramatic effect too.

That said, here's what you can expect to see in Dysart:

Dutch influenced houses on Pan Ha' – these are 16th and 18th century painted dwellings. Pan Ha' or Pan Haugh means low-lying ground of the salt pans. A lot of the houses here have been restored by the National Trust for Scotland between 1968 and 1969.

Six-storey St Serf's Church Tower – located on Shore Road and dates back to 1500. This is considered as one of the finest examples of a battlemented church tower in Scotland. Also, it's the only remaining part of St Serf's Church.

Dysart Tolbooth – located on High Street and constructed in 1576. This serves as the centrepiece of Dysart's historic buildings. It had many uses over the years: a public weigh-in and measures house, a guards house and a prison.

Francis Collery gearhead – this is a landmark that marks the northern boundaries of the town.

Dysart House – formerly the seat of the Earl of Rosslyn.

Harbourmaster's House – a B-listed 19th-century building located next to the Dysart Harbour. Here is where you can find information about the famous Fife Coastal Path. The path is a long-distance route where you can spot wildlife, investigate ancient religious sites, explore amazing geology and learn about military history along the coastline of Fife. You can even explore the award-winning beaches of Fife if you need to take a break.

If these are the activities you love, you'll definitely enjoy what Dysart has to offer. If you intend for the trip to be a romantic one, don't forget to get your date some flowers in Dysart to present to them at your accommodation so you set a romantic tone right from the get go.
