Flower Delivery to Huntley by Clare Florist
The picturesque and historic village of Huntley is located just seven miles to the west of Gloucester, on the northern edge of the scenic Forest of Dean and just five miles from the border with Herefordshire.
Huntley is old enough to have been mentioned in the 11th century Domesday Book and its name means 'Huntsman's clearing'. As a parliamentary garrison it was fiercely contested during the English Civil War, captured by the Royalists in 1643 and retaken by Cromwell's Roundheads just a year later. In 1826 the coaching inn played host to the journalist and reformer William Cobbett. Huntley's other claim to fame was being home, until the 1970s, to the Forest of Dean writer Winifred Foley and her husband.
Many of Huntley's 500 or so inhabitants commute to Gloucester each day whilst the rest work in local hotels and restaurants, the golf course, garden centre, riding school, pub (The Red Lion) and other businesses.
The village is especially well known for growing vegetables and fruit (including pears, apples and stoned fruits) as well as plants and flowers such as wild daffodils, bluebells and primroses. Most of this produce goes to local hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, farm shops and florists. There is no shortage of options for flower delivery in Huntley!
Huntley has a thriving football club, which plays in the Northern Senior League of Gloucestershire County League. The cricket club dates from 1874 and runs a popular beer festival every summer.
To the west of the village is a quarry which has a collection of ancient volcanic rocks not seen anywhere else in the country. The quarry and surrounding land is in the process of being acquired by the Gloucestershire Geology Trust. It will become the UK's first geology reserve and the first owned by a geology trust.
