Historians know this because the ruins of it remain there and date back to the 12th century. In 1437, the coronation ceremony of King Henry VI was actually held in Merton Priory. This is the only time in the last 1,000 years that a king of England did not get crowned in Westminster Abbey.

The River Wandle is close to Colliers Wood and contains the Merton Abbey Mills right on its bank. The River Wandle had gained a reputation for having more mills on its bank per mile than any other river on the planet. There are approximately 90 mills on the River Wandle’s bank, which is a total of 11 miles long. During the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late 19th century, a dyeworks was moved to Merton Abbey Mills because the water from the river helped with the dyeing process. Unfortunately, the dyeworks closed down in 1940.
