Elephant & Castle, or The Elephant as it is locally abbreviated, is a major road junction located in Central London. Although the area is – in the proper sense – located in Newington, its proximity to the London underground has led it to be called the Elephant and Castle, which is derived from a local coaching inn.

THE BASICS

There are two linked London Underground stations to The Elephant – the Northern and Bakerloo lines and a National Rail station served by Southeastern and First Thames Capital Connect.

There are several local buildings located here, including Skipton House, which is part of the Department of Health; Perronet House, an award-winning residential block; a large portion of the London South Bank University campus; the London College of Communication; Ministry of Sound nightclub; and the Metropolitan Tabernacle.

HISTORY

The Elephant was previously known as Newington during the medieval period and was part of rural Surrey.

Its importance emerged following the building of Westminster Bridge in 1751, as well as the improvements to the London Bridge. The construction and enhancement of these structures required by-pass roads which resulted in the area being built-up as part of the metropolis during the late Georgian and Victorian periods.

The area became a well-known shopping area dubbed as “the Piccadilly (Circus) of South London” from 1900-1939.

During World War II, The Elephant was a target for German air raids and suffered through “raging fires.”

Major developments were staged in the area from 1945 to 2000. And today, the area is subject to a redevelopment with a budget of £1.5 billion.
