History

Chadderton was historically part of Lancashire and had a status of manorial township in the Middle Ages with two mansions, Foxdenton Hall and Chadderton Hall. The former is a Georgian mansion that used to be the property of the Radclyffes and now is open to the public and now has public gardens. Conversely, the Chadderton Hall also used to be a manor but has been transformed into a pleasure garden with a menagerie and a boating lake. The town of Chadderton derived its name from Caderton, a combination of the words, “Cader” or “Cater” and “ton”. The first word means fortified place among the hills while the second word is synonymous to settlement. Thus, Chadderton means “farm or settlement at the foothills of Cadeir.
