Located at the southern end of the Great Glen, Spean Bridge is a small and attractive village that serves as an ideal touring base thanks to being located at a junction of roads. It lies north to Inverness and the Isle of Skye, south to Fort William, and East through Glen Spean towards Loch Laggan and Strathspey.

Spean Bridge is also best known for the famous Commando Memorial, which commemorates the soldiers who died during the Second World War, as well as those who gained their Green Berets at the Commandos Basic Training Centre in nearby Achnacarry.

The village is said to have taken its name from Telford's bridge of 1819 which carries the A82 route over the river at the heart of the village. However, Spean Bridge got its name from the High Bridge over River Spean on General Wade's military road between Fort William and Fort Augustus.

Although Spean Bridge is a quiet and peaceful town nowadays, its history was always associated with warfare and conflict.

A bloody battle was fought between Clanranald and the Camerons against the Frasers in 1544 in the northern end of Loch Lorry. The 17th century saw the village as witness to the Jacobite wars. The town again became affected by war the following century during World War II as the Dark Valley became the primary Commando Training Centre for the British Armed Forces.

The town of spean Bridge has many attractions, including the ruins of General Wade's High Bridge – This was the site of the first battle between Jacobite clansmen and government troops. The Commando exhibition at the Spean Bridge Hotel  explains the story of the time when the village was witness home to the training centre for Armed Forces.

Clan Cameron Museum – This is located in Achnacarry and houses many mementoes from the town's history with the troops. The museum also celebrates the history of the Clan as well as their role in the failed Jacobite Rising in 1745.
