The village used to operate the Anglesey Central Railway until it was closed in 1993. One historic event that is said to have taken place in Llangwyllog was a battle between Owain Gwynedd, the first king of Wales, and the armies of the Norsemen, Manx and Erse in 1134, where the latter invaded the island.
