Chattenden in Kent is a small village located in England. It belongs to the Hoo Parish and can be found just north of Wainscott. It is a small and quaint village that has a long history in the military sector. Dating back to the late 1870's the Chattenden, Kent area was used to store gunpowder and ammunition for the military. It housed five magazines that were used as storage units for 40,000 barrels of gunpowder. There was a barracks built to provide housing for the officers assigned to guard the magazines houses. At the early beginning of the 1900's this storage area saw an expansion to provide more storage room for highly explosive material but, by 1912 it was apparent that this area was unprotected from air strikes or attacks. The first British anti aircraft emplacements was designed for the Chattenden Ridge area. The area remained as a storage facility through the first and second World Wars and then, after, provided a training facility to the Royal School Of Military Engineering.

In the 1980's, however, the area had been evacuated and demolished. Only the original 1870's magazines were left standing. In 2007 the area began to see redevelopments with residential housing and limited industrial uses. It was discovered that the area is a natural habitat for singing male nightingales. It comprises over 1% of the United Kingdom's total male singing nightingale population. Because of the species migration practices to Africa and back incorporating a biodiversity offsetting plan to ensure the safety and return of these signing male Nightingale is impossible. The birds will return to the same trees every year after migration which makes it difficult to work around their habitat.

As of 2015 contractors and developers have put a hold on any further development to the area because of the Nightingale population. Locals and many others across the UK have opposed the further development to the are. There was suppose to be an addition 5,000 new residential homes, schools, shopping centers and more provided for the area. There are ongoing discussion of a new developer taking over the project but that is still awaiting a results from a public inquiry.
