Headcorn is a village and civil parish in the Maidstone District of Kent. Specifically, it is situated on the floodplain of the River Beult and is about 8 miles from the Maidstone county town on the A274 road to Tenterden.

Aside from a parish church, which is dedicated to saints Peter and Paul, the village has other churches and chapels for the Baptist, Methodist and Roman Catholic congregations. It has a small airfield nearby, where there is a parachuting centre and an aviation museum. The Headcorn Parachute Club is the only club of skydivers in Kent and is home to world record holders and national champions. The village is also run by railway stations, including one that is named after it on the South Eastern Main Line between Dover and London and the South Eastern Railway, which opened the second section of its main line to Ashford. By 1844, trains started running from London to Dover, which is the longest stretch of straight line in the UK.

The village also boasts of historical sites and other tourists spots. This means you can visit it for any kind of holiday. For a romantic getaway, do not forget to order flowers for delivery to Headcorn to make the experience more special for you and your love.

History

Headcorn has a considerable historical background and prides itself in keeping up with today’s developments. Its earliest written records are references in charters of King Offa and King Wihtred to Little Southernden and Wick Farm. It is presumed that the village started during the days of the Kingdom of Kent as a clearing or den, to which pigs were driven from the northern regions of the county to feed on beech mast and acorns in the Wealden Forest. Its name possibly means “tree trunk that is used as a footbridge by a man named Hydeca”.

King Henry III appointed Henry of Ospringe as the first Rector in 1222, but in 1239, the King gave the den of Headcorn to the Maison Dieu at Ospringe. In 1251, the Master and Bretheren of Ospringe were then granted a weekly market on Thursdays and an annual fair on St Peter and St Paul’s Day on the 29th of June. However, due to the dissolution of the Ospringe house in 1842 and the turnover of the Maison Dieu to St John’s College, the fair was later held on the 12th of June, having been merged with the Moatenden Priory trinity-tide fair.

Up to the 19th century, the village prospered due to its good channels of trade and its booming industries, especially weaving.
