HISTORY

In the 7th century, St Aidan arrived at the riverside settlements. Since there was no church, a cross was put up to serve as a place of worship. The name Croston translates to “cross-town” and is derived from two Old English words “cross” and “tun”, which means town, homestead or village.

Croston was once larger than it is today. It used to include Chorley, Much Hoole, Rufford, Bretherton, Mawdesley, Tarleton, Hesketh Bank, Bipsham, Walmer Bridge and Ulnes Walton. As a result of the series of separations between 1642 and 1821, the aforementioned places became independent parishes.

In 1283, Edward I granted a charter permitting an annual medieval fair and market to be held in the village green. Also, based on old maps, a castle is said to have existed in town – but a wooden kind as there is no evidence of a stone structure.

The village green is home to several celebrations, including:

May Day Madness – held on 1 May, this is an ancient Northern Hemisphere spring festival that is usually a public holiday as well. During this event, one can expect dances, singing and cake. Some might even decorate homes with some Croston flowers.

Croston Old School – another Grade II listed building originating from 1660. The structure did undergo a substantial rebuild in 1827.

The Grapes – a historic pub dating back prior to the 19th century.
