History

Although it is commonly believed by many people that Padiham’s name is of Anglo-Saxon origin, it is not recorded in the Domesday Book. In fact, there is no prehistoric or Roman site that has been found here. Its first recorded mention, as “Padyngham”, dates back to 1294, where it served as a market town for hundreds of years trading produce from Pendleside. The town expanded and then redeveloped during the Industrial Revolution, transforming its centre as a conservation area.

For its population, it peaked at about 14,000 in 1921 but then declined to 10,000 in the 1960s and 8,998 in 2001. This was due to the movement of people to the southern part of England to search for work after the coal, engineering and traditional cotton industries declined during that time.

Landmarks/Attractions

Padiham is home to many monuments and natural attractions that appeal to travelers all year round. These include the following:

Hapton Castle – just about 2 miles away from the town, this castle has been described as a probable fortified manor house. It is also believed to be a masonry castle and a pele tower.
Towneley Castle Hill – this has previously been described as a timber castle. Here you will find remains, including trenches and ditches, of what it was during early times. It is surrounded by beautiful landscapes that make it suitable for a sight-seeing tour.
Great Hameldon Peak – this is a 1,342-foot mountain peak near Hebden Bridge. Based on data, it ranks as the 765th highest mountain in England and the 4,282nd highest mountain in the UK. Other peaks nearby are Hail Storm Hill, Cowpe Lowe, Bull Hill, Whittle Pike and Hail Storm Hill.
Forest of Rossendale – also known as Rossendale Valley, this is an upland area in Lancashire. One of its earliest sites of historical interest is that of the dykes of Broadclough.
Pendle Hill – famously linked to the Witch Trials of 1612, this bewitching site is great for walks, bike rides and nature exploration through trails with picturesque views.

Aside from these, there are also nearby attractions, including the Browsholme Hall, Skipton Castle, Pickup Bank Reservoir, Rooley Moor and Winter Hill.

Events

The town is known for offering enjoyable events for the young and old. These include comedy acts, stunt shows, theatre, dance parties, concerts and nightlife activities. Perhaps amongst of the most popular events to be held here is the “TS Eliot Festival of the North” and the “Padiham Beer Festival”.
